Hotel Superior

Nothing in this world is absolutely perfect and we believe that it is our duty to inform you of any weak points that some hotels may have, even if they are the best in a particular region; some may be small or located in a remote area but we maintain our authenticity through offering you the most in each experience whether that be luxury or not.

All photographs have been taken by us during our repeat visits to each location. We aim to present the accommodation in its true form and won't bother with embellishing the images as we would like you to see them for what they are, in reality.

The quality of accommodation may improve with time or may deplete, due to various reasons (change of direction or lack of maintenance etc) this can happen in just a few months. But we consider customer feedback to be very important and it helps us greatly to review our selection.

SP-2: Time travel luxury in Java

This was once a palace in the Dutch colonial era and the huge dining-room has kept its period features (you can even see many bullet holes in the floor!); it has a bar with a pool table and a fine collection of colonial paintings and posters. The rooms are very comfortable with air conditioning, mini-bar and TV and of course there's a large pool on site for you to enjoy. This accommodation is a one hour drive from the Dieng Plateau.

SP-5: 5 minutes from the beach of Jimbaran

This is a discreet luxury hotel which spreads its spacious rooms across a beautiful tropical garden, all with air conditioning, a private terrace or balcony and television. The service is attentive but subtle. The swimming pool is large and the restaurant is excellent, it is in a perfect location, just 5 minutes walk from the famous Jimbaran beach or a 15 minute drive to the centre of Kuta; the perfect compromise between tranquillity and entertainment.

SP-14: A charming hotel in Banyuwangi, East Java

If the size of this hotel (about forty rooms) stunts its intimacy, it is nevertheless "charming". The bungalows are scattered across a vast coconut grove that borders the sea. There's a wonderful large pool which you can have a dip in day or night and the rooms are very comfortable and fully fitted with air conditioning, hot water, a TV and a mini-bar. The restaurant offers very good food (do not miss the "lumpia") and you may be served in your room if you wish. This is a great base from which to tackle the Ijen volcano with the assurance of spending a night that is perfectly relaxed.

SP-17: Our favorite in Gili Trawangan

This small hotel has just opened its doors will probably go to the Authentic Luxury category in a year or two but for now as it is still new, we offer it in Superior Authentic but it really is a gem of a hotel. It is located on the nicest beach on the island, away from the hustle around the harbour but just close enough from the shore to see colourful coral and fish. The bungalows are elegant, artistically Balinese and have partially open bathrooms.

SP-20: Edge of Yogyakarta

This pretty boutique accommodation is located just south of the city and invites you to sleep in authentic Javanese houses which were solidly built by villagers. In charming wooden finish, the six houses offer an excellent level of comfort all of which include air conditioning and fixtures that stay true to the traditional interior design. You can also cool off in a lovely pool and visit the huge collection of Javanese art in a small museum attached to the hotel, the artist is the hotel owner himself. This accommodation has the ambience of traditional Javanese style which the city often attempts to stifle; the city centre is about a 15 minute drive.

SP-21: Gorgeous view of the Sumbing volcano (Centre of Java)

This hotel is designed like a village. Intended rather for the elite Javanese, it is still a design to meet an international standard of refinement. There's a good quality of intimacy and it is a hotel to please everyone yet still has character. Spas, swimming pools, a playground for children, fitness centre, fishing ponds, river rafting on the river below and a golf course with 18 holes (at low prices) all in the heart of beautiful countryside of rivers, mountains and terraced rice paddies.

SP-22: The best in the Toraja country

This hotel has done well as it has been through a state of "bankruptcy" but has been revived with some serious management, maintenance and reinvestment support, which is good to see. The bungalows are inspired by the traditional Toraja style and are of a very decent standard, even if they do appear to be stuck in the style of the 90s. The arrangement of the site shows off the wonderful nature that surrounds it. The pool is very large and will delight those who do not mind cold water. The restoration is of stunning quality and the breakfast is particularly rich and varied. It's the best in Toraja country without being luxurious but is certainly pleasing.

SP-23: An excellent spot in the south of the Agung volcano

The rooms in this accommodation are grand and luxurious by their size and tasteful furnishings. They are light and airy with great views of the volcano, with a romantic spot which has been decorated with a swimming pool. The menu of the restaurant is extensive and the quality of service is exceptional in this very remote and hidden area.

SP-25: A romantic and friendly spot in Candidasa

This accommodation is wonderfully pretty and has eight elegant and comfortable bungalows, all with partially open en-suite bathrooms. Each bungalow is separated from one another by dainty little fish ponds. The pool is a good size, and the restaurant offers a varied and delicate menu and overlooks the sea; it is magnificent to dine before this setting as the sun is going down.

SP-28: A small hotel that gives great memories in Bira (Sulawesi)

We dare to say that this is splendidly isolated out in the middle of a "postcard" location which we think is one of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia. The three bungalows are all air-conditioned, have hot water and have magnificent views of the vast glistening turquoise waters. The small restaurant is quality, the chef really does know how to cook good food and the drinks are wonderfully refreshing and there's a swimming pool where small colourful fish swim, there really is nothing missing from this majestic setting.

SP-33: In the privacy of rice fields of Payangan, north of Ubud

This accommodation opened in December 2011 and sits in the depths of vast rice paddies, completely untouched by tourism. The six rooms, half wooden bungalows from Java (joglos), are tastefully arranged. The quaint and pretty restaurant offers dishes that are created with the use of local products; body treatments are available at affordable rates and the pool is a lovely size. You'll be truly touched by the care and grace that the Balinese put into their work to cultivate the landscape. It is romantically authentic; the only disadvantage of this accommodation is that it is a 20 minute drive from the centre of Ubud. However it is still possible for you to dine in the town centre if you wish, at the reception desk, transport can be arranged upon request.

SP-34: Comfortable accommodation that faces the beautiful beach of Kuta, Lombok

Places to stay in Kuta, Lombok are rare even though this region has the most beautiful beaches in all of Indonesia. They are not particularly remarkable in their appearance but the rooms here are spotlessly clean, equipped with hot water and air conditioning. We therefore regret the lack of the owner's taste but that can be forgiven because of the splendour that is brought by the sensational surroundings.
