Hotel Standard

Nothing in this world is absolutely perfect and we believe that it is our duty to inform you of any weak points that some hotels may have, even if they are the best in a particular region; some may be small or located in a remote area but we maintain our authenticity through offering you the most in each experience whether that be luxury or not.

All photographs have been taken by us during our repeat visits to each location. We aim to present the accommodation in its true form and won't bother with embellishing the images as we would like you to see them for what they are, in reality.

The quality of accommodation may improve with time or may deplete, due to various reasons (change of direction or lack of maintenance etc) this can happen in just a few months. But we consider customer feedback to be very important and it helps us greatly to review our selection.

SA-1: A small, intimate hotel In Ubud (Bali)

This accommodation isn't one to be envied by royal standards but is certainly a jewel in this category. Each bungalow has a terrace and small garden which aren't overlooked by prying eyes and the rooms relate in some way to the level of luxury. There is a lovely pool on the edge of the rice fields and there are spa treatments at low prices. Here you can enjoy the peacefulness of the countryside while being just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Ubud.

SA-16: A haven in the heart of the city (Jogjakarta, Java)

This new hotel may very well be the gem of its class; the gardens are pretty and well-maintained, the pool is gorgeous and the rooms are air conditioned and tastefully decorated. This very pleasing family-run site is just a 5 minute walk from Kraton.

SA-32: A quiet oasis in Sanur

Situated at the end of the road that leads to the legendary Balangan beach, this accommodation boasts quaint and cosy bamboo roofed bungalows that are light and airy. Just a short walk away from the glorious Indian Ocean, this place is quite a dreamy setting. The pool is surrounded by teak decking which makes it an ideal spot for enjoying the sun.

SA-33: Charming home-stay accommodation, East Java

This small guesthouse is located in one of the remotest parts of Java where the bicycle is still the most used means of transport. You will completely escape the modern world by tasting the delicious timelessness of rural life. The three rooms have teak furniture and are crafted in pure Javanese style with nice bathrooms that are carved from volcanic stone. From the terrace you can enjoy extensive views of rice fields and distant mountains. You are only a few miles of one of the finest white sand beaches of Java so you might decide to cycle there. Your hosts, Ibu Bapak Iin and Henry will welcome you warmly and will prepare delicate traditional cuisine.

SA-36: The best accommodation in town, Sengkang (Sulawesi)

Normally, we wouldn't expect to find a hotel with a pool in this town, as lovely as it is but deep in the middle of nowhere, so far away from tourism but this one has. This hotel is run by the princely Bugis family and is the best in the city. It may not have masses of character but the rooms are comfortable, equipped with air conditioning and are well maintained, service is always presented with a smile.

SA-37: A small and intimate hotel by the sea, near Senggigi

The large garden that extends to the beach is a rather attractive feature and the small bar/restaurant serves great cuisine. There are only six rooms and some of them are interconnecting which is great for families or groups of friends; all of course, have air conditioning. They are smart and clean, not necessarily vibrant and beaming with artistic decor but this place is great value for money and one must take note of that. After all, with the calm sea before you that's perfect for swimming in, there isn't really much to miss.

SA-38: A love nest in the Labuhanbajo area

Beautifully arranged on the hillside, these wooden bungalows get gorgeous views of the bay. The hotel industry in Flores is usually quite gloomy but this site is full of life and vigour. The restaurant overlooks the long white sand beach which is the best kind of scenery for enjoying a fine cuisine meal. Massages and body treatments are available as well as courses; here you can also take advantage of sea canoeing, horseback riding and scuba or surface diving.

SA-41: A warm and charming site in Lovina

The first attraction that hits the eyes here is the beautiful and undisturbed view of the ocean. Run by a Balinese family, this accommodation is small and pretty and the bungalows are comfortable with open (yet private) bathrooms that all vary in decoration but all have that artistic Balinese flare.

SA-42: A safe bet in Jember

Lacking in charm but impeccably clean, this hotel has great service and is actually the best in town. It's an excellent spot for accessing the Meru Betiri nature reserve. Pleasingly enough, there is a nice large swimming pool and all rooms are air conditioned.

SA-45: Home-stay in Ubud

This small accommodation is run by a Balinese family and sits on a hillside overlooking a small river. The natural settings on site are quaint and pretty and have been wonderfully embellished. There is a small pool and it is only a 5 minute walk to the market, the bustling part of town. The rooms are fairly standard and aren't installed with air conditioning but that doesn't particularly matter as the nights in Ubud are cool. This place is rather popular so must be reserved well in advance.
